Do I Need You?
No man is an island unto himself! In this message I want to discuss why we need people in our lives that have been hand-picked by God. We can’t go around and pick people to be in our lives without God’s consent. There are people who God wants to place in our lives that we may never have chosen to be our friends. God knows who we need to help us and we need to appreciate them. We must know that we can’t do God’s purpose alone. In Ecclesiastes 4 v. 9 the word says that “two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow : but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” The three fold cord is you, your friend and Jesus. All three are needed to fulfill God’s calling on your life.
Here are seven reasons why you need other believers, the ones that have been hand-picked to help you (not that you hand picked):
1.) For miracles- Mt. 18 v. 19 – “Again, I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. One could be wavering in their faith but when they agree with someone they get the miracle they need.
2.) To pray for you if you are weak-James 5 v. 14 “if there is any sick among call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him … and the prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord shall raise him up..”
3.) You can’t expect forgiveness in its fullness- James 5 v. 16 “confess your faults to one another…” It is so good after making a mistake and to avoid carrying guilt around to have someone you can confide in who will help you to get back into Christ’s forgiveness flow. This will break any condemnation from the devil.
4.) You need someone to unite with you for purpose and goals—Acts 2 v. 1 – the 120 believers were together in one accord and the Holy Spirit fell on them. They were able to do exploits in the Name of Jesus because they were united in purpose. We should all hang around with people who have greater faith and who also want to be a success in Jesus. They will always pull us up. Hanging around with people of little or no aspirations will pull you down.
5.) Sometime you may be facing burdens that you can’t bear yourself-“we that are strong ought to always bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves.” Gal. 6 v. 2 “bear one another’s burdens..”
6.) We all need a watchman to watch over us. One who is far away from the situation to see impartially. Heb. 13 v. 17 – “obey they that have the rule over you and submit yourselves: for they watch over your souls, as they must give account, that they may do it with joy and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” In Ezekiel 33 v. 1-7 God talks about watchmen that when they see trouble must warn the people and whoever doesn’t heed the warning the blood will be on their own head.
7.) You need someone to rejoice with you- Rom. 12 v. 15 “rejoice with them that do rejoice and weep with them that weep.” You need someone who you can confide in and express your self in a way that you may not be able to do with anyone else.
In 1 Samuel Chapter 14 there is a story of Jonathan and his armor bearer that confirms this message: there were only two swords in all of Israel as the Philistines were sharpening all the others. The Philistines chose this time to attack. Jonathan asked his armor bearer to come with him to fight the enemy by themselves (v. 6). The relationship was so close that the armor bearer said “do all that is in your heart: turn thee; behold I am with thee according to thy heart.” Even though there were many other people there God didn’t assign anybody to Jonathan but his armor bearer. His armor bearer was the only one that had the same heart and purpose. They had the same purpose in their heart and they had God in the middle of them. When the two of them went against the enemy God went with them. This was the three-fold cord that could not be broken. The cord was so strong that the two of them went against the enemy and killed twenty of them initially and this put a fear into the heart of the enemy and they killed each other (v. 14-16).
God put Jonathan and David together because they had the same heart. David went against the enemy all by himself in killing Goliath as recorded in 1 Sam. Chapter 17. So, both David and Jonathan had the same heart. They both knew that if God was with them who could successfully come against them. So, it was only natural that God would assign them to each other. It is recorded in 1 Sam. Chapter 20 that Jonathan knew of his father’s plot to kill David and warned David. Jonathan loved David so much! Do you see the power of two in agreement – the power of God assigning somebody to your life with the same heart as you that could possibly save your life?
These are just some of the reasons why you need someone in your life who God has assigned to you. God knows what we need. No man is an island unto your self. Remember again, a three-fold cord can not be broken. It is you, the person Jesus has assigned to you and Him as the third.
